Comprehensive Venous Evaluation

Varicose veins are most often caused by chronic venous insufficiency, a condition in which vein valves fail and blood flows backward in the legs. Because venous disease occurs beneath the skin, a visual exam alone is not sufficient to determine severity or appropriate treatment.

At our Park Ridge clinic, diagnosis begins with a comprehensive venous ultrasound evaluation. This non-invasive study allows Dr. Tryzno to assess:

  • Blood flow in the leg veins
  • Vein valve function
  • The presence and extent of venous reflux

Ultrasound findings are not used in isolation to determine disease severity or medical necessity. Treatment decisions are based on the complete clinical picture, including:

  • Patient symptoms
  • Functional limitations
  • Physical examination findings
  • Ultrasound results

This approach follows accepted medical standards and helps avoid unnecessary procedures.

Not all patients require procedural treatment. When appropriate, conservative management or monitoring may be recommended and discussed clearly.

SPIDER VEINS ON THE LEGS

Spider veins on the legs are small surface veins that are often treated for cosmetic improvement. In many patients, spider veins are an isolated cosmetic concern. In others, certain spider vein patterns may be associated with underlying venous insufficiency (CVI) and benefit from medical evaluation.

When cosmetic treatment is appropriate, options may include:

  • Sclerotherapy injections
  • Laser treatment

Treatment recommendations are based on clinical findings and venous evaluation when indicated.

VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENT OPTIONS

When treatment is medically indicated, options may include:

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

EVLA is a minimally invasive procedure used to close incompetent saphenous veins that are causing venous reflux. A thin laser fiber is placed inside the vein under ultrasound guidance, allowing the vein to be sealed from within so blood is redirected to healthier veins.

Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy

This treatment involves injecting a medical solution into refluxing or abnormal veins identified on ultrasound. The treated veins gradually collapse and are absorbed by the body, helping reduce symptoms and improve circulation. It is commonly used for veins not suitable for laser treatment.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy

Ambulatory phlebectomy is used to remove large surface varicose veins through very small skin openings. It is often performed after underlying reflux has been treated and allows direct removal of bulging veins that do not respond to other methods.

Compression Therapy & Conservative Care

In some cases, compression stockings, activity modification, and monitoring may be recommended. Conservative care may be used as an initial step, as part of insurance requirements, or when procedural treatment is not indicated.

Treatment is often performed in stages, focusing first on the underlying source of reflux and then addressing residual veins as appropriate. This strategy improves outcomes and minimizes recurrence, rather than treating only visible veins.

Insurance and Self-Pay Options

Many varicose vein treatments are considered medically necessary when symptoms and ultrasound findings meet clinical criteria and may be covered by insurance.

For patients without insurance coverage or with high deductibles, our clinic offers transparent self-pay options. Coverage and pricing are reviewed during your consultation so you can make informed decisions about your care.
