Advanced Varicose Vein Care
Treatment of Varicose Vein Disease (Chronic Venous Insufficiency)
Page Summary
This page explains how varicose vein disease is treated, why care is performed in stages, and which procedures are appropriate based on safety and medical necessity.
Varicose vein disease—also known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)—is a progressive medical condition. It cannot be reversed and typically worsens over time, regardless of the cause. This includes cases related to genetics, pregnancy, prolonged standing, or a prior blood clot.
There is no medication that can cure varicose veins. While certain medications may temporarily relieve symptoms, they do not correct the underlying vein dysfunction. Treatment focuses on closing or removing abnormal superficial veins that are no longer functioning properly.
Types of Varicose Vein Treatment
There are two main categories of treatment:
1. Conservative Management
Non-invasive measures that may help reduce symptoms, including:
- Graduated compression stockings
- Regular walking and physical activity
- Weight management and lifestyle modification
Conservative therapy may improve comfort but does not eliminate diseased veins.
2. Corrective (Procedural) Treatment
Minimally invasive procedures designed to close or remove malfunctioning superficial veins, including:
- Endovenous laser ablation
- Injection-based sclerotherapy
- Ambulatory phlebectomy
In many cases, the best outcomes are achieved with a combination of conservative and corrective treatments.
Corrective treatment options are described in more detail on our Methods of Varicose Vein Treatment page.
Understanding the Treatment Process
Varicose vein treatment is a process, not a single event. Care is typically performed in stages:
- Closure of the primary refluxing (problem) veins
- Follow-up ultrasound evaluation
- Treatment of remaining smaller varicose or branch veins as needed
All available treatments work by closing or removing abnormal superficial veins. There are no procedures that repair or rebuild damaged veins. Treatment is intended to relieve symptoms, improve circulation, and slow disease progression—not to cure CVI.
Why Only Superficial Veins Are Treated
Many patients worry that closing veins could impair circulation. In reality, treatment targets only superficial veins, which normally carry a small percentage of blood from the legs.
The deep venous system, responsible for the majority of leg circulation, is never treated and remains fully intact.
Superficial varicose veins often have damaged valves and allow blood to flow backward, contributing to pain, swelling, and skin changes. Closing these nonfunctional veins redirects blood into healthier pathways, supporting more efficient circulation while preserving the veins essential for normal blood flow.
Our Varicose Vein Treatment Options
- Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) – widely used treatment for refluxing saphenous veins
- Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy – treatment for deeper or non-visible varicose veins
- Compression Sclerotherapy – treatment for reticular veins and spider veins
- Ambulatory Phlebectomy – surgical removal of large, bulging varicose veins when indicated
- Cosmetic Sclerotherapy of Spider Veins – cosmetic treatment to improve the appearance of visible spider and small reticular veins
Corrective treatment options are described in more detail on our Methods of Varicose Vein Treatment page.
