WHAT ARE SPIDER VEINS?
Spider veins are small superficial veins that appear close to the surface of the skin.
They are typically:
• Red
• Purple
• Blue
• Thin and web-like
Spider veins most commonly develop on the:
• Thighs
• Calves
• Ankles
Although spider veins are usually cosmetic, certain patterns may suggest underlying venous insufficiency, which may require medical evaluation before cosmetic treatment.
COSMETIC SPIDER VEIN TREATMENT OPTIONS
Sclerotherapy Injections
Sclerotherapy is the most commonly performed treatment for spider veins on the legs.
During the procedure, a medical solution is injected into the vein using a very fine needle. The treated vein collapses and gradually fades as the body absorbs it.
Sclerotherapy is well established for improving the appearance of:
• Spider veins
• Reticular (blue) veins
• Small superficial varicose veins
Treatment is performed in the office and typically takes 30–45 minutes.

DOES SPIDER VEIN TREATMENT HURT?
Sclerotherapy injections are performed using a very fine needle and are generally well tolerated.
Most patients describe the sensation as mild pinching or brief stinging during the injection. The discomfort typically lasts only a few seconds.
Treatment sessions usually take 30–45 minutes, depending on the number of veins treated.
Because spider vein treatment is performed using small needles and superficial veins, no anesthesia or sedation is required, and most patients return to normal daily activities immediately after the procedure.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM SPIDER VEIN TREATMENT
Spider vein treatment is usually performed in stages to allow gradual improvement.
Most patients notice fading of treated veins over several weeks.
Multiple sessions may be required depending on:
• Number of veins
• Vein size
• Skin tone
• Individual healing response
Spider vein treatment is considered cosmetic and is generally not covered by insurance.
VASCULAR LASER TREATMENT
Laser treatment may be considered for selected cosmetic spider veins, particularly when the vessels are very small or located in delicate areas.
Laser therapy may be appropriate when:
• Only a small number of spider veins are present
• The veins are very fine or superficial
• Injection treatment is not preferred
• Treatment is limited to small cosmetic areas
Laser energy targets hemoglobin within the blood vessel, causing the vessel to collapse and gradually fade.
Multiple treatment sessions are often required to achieve cosmetic improvement.
For spider veins on the legs, cosmetic sclerotherapy is generally considered the primary treatment when veins are suitable for injection.
Compared with laser treatment, sclerotherapy typically:
• Treats a larger number of veins in a single session
• Produces less surrounding skin irritation
• Provides more predictable cosmetic improvement for leg veins
Laser treatment may still be useful for very small vessels or limited treatment areas, and in some cases laser therapy and sclerotherapy may be combined to achieve the best cosmetic outcome.
Treatment selection is individualized based on vein size, location, and clinical findings.

WHY SPIDER VEINS MAY RETURN OVER TIME
Spider vein treatment improves the appearance of existing veins, but it does not prevent new veins from developing in the future.
Several factors may contribute to the appearance of new spider veins over time, including:
• Genetic predisposition
• Hormonal influences
• Prolonged standing or occupational factors
• Pregnancy
• Natural aging of vein walls
•
Progression of underlying venous insufficiency
Sclerotherapy closes the veins that are treated. However, the underlying tendency for new veins to develop may remain. Over time, additional spider veins may appear in nearby areas.
In some patients, spider veins represent an early visible stage of chronic venous insufficiency, a condition in which vein valves weaken and blood flows backward within the leg veins (venous reflux). As venous disease progresses, new superficial veins may gradually develop.
For this reason, spider vein treatment is often performed in stages, and occasional maintenance treatment may be recommended to maintain cosmetic improvement.
Evaluation by a physician experienced in venous disease helps determine whether spider veins are purely cosmetic or part of a broader pattern of venous insufficiency.
IN-OFFICE CARE & RECOVERY
All treatments are performed in our Park Ridge clinic.
• No hospital visit required
• Most patients return to normal daily activities the same day
• Compression stockings may be recommended after treatment
Recovery recommendations vary depending on the treatment plan.
VEIN SPECIALIST EXPERIENCE MATTERS
Although spider vein injections appear as a simple cosmetic procedure, successful treatment depends on proper vein selection, precise injection technique, and understanding of the underlying venous circulation.
In many cosmetic settings, spider veins are treated without evaluation of deeper venous function.
At International Vein & Skin Institute, treatment is provided by a physician specializing in venous disease, allowing both cosmetic improvement and appropriate medical assessment when needed.
Dr. Tryzno is a Diplomate of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine and holds the Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) credential.
Dr. Tryzno began performing endovenous vein procedures shortly after their introduction in the United States and has more than two decades of experience in modern venous treatments.
These qualifications reflect advanced training in:
• Venous anatomy and physiology
• Ultrasound evaluation of vein function
• Injection and catheter-based vein procedures
• Diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency
When spider veins are treated in a medical vein practice, the physician performing treatment can recognize patterns that may indicate underlying venous reflux, which may influence treatment planning.
This integrated approach allows both cosmetic treatment and medical evaluation when appropriate.
