ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION (EVLA)

Laser Treatment for Varicose Veins in Park Ridge, IL

Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) is a minimally invasive procedure performed to treat symptomatic varicose veins caused by reflux in a saphenous vein. EVLA is one of the most reliable treatments for varicose vein reflux, with high rates of successful vein closure reported in clinical practice.

At International Vein & Skin Institute, EVLA procedures are personally performed by Dr. Jozef Tryzno, MD, RVT, DABVLM, a board-certified physician with more than 25 years of experience in venous disease.

During EVLA, the physician uses ultrasound guidance and controlled laser energy to close a malfunctioning vein from the inside. Blood flow is then naturally redirected into healthy veins.

The procedure is performed in our Park Ridge clinic using local anesthesia, without the need for hospitalization or general anesthesia.

HOW ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION (EVLA) IS PERFORMED

Varicose veins often develop when vein valves fail, allowing blood to flow backward in the legs. This condition is known as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

During Endovenous Laser Ablation, the physician closes the malfunctioning vein from the inside using controlled laser energy delivered through a thin fiber.

The procedure is performed under ultrasound guidance to ensure accurate placement and patient safety.

During the procedure:

• A thin laser fiber is inserted into the affected vein through a small skin puncture
• Local anesthetic is placed along the vein to provide comfort and protect surrounding tissue
• Controlled laser energy is delivered inside the vein, causing the vein wall to collapse and seal closed

Once the vein is closed, blood flow is naturally redirected into healthy veins that continue to function normally.

Over time, the treated vein is gradually absorbed by the body as part of the normal healing process.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM EVLA TREATMENT

Endovenous laser ablation is performed in our clinic and typically takes about 30–45 minutes, depending on the vein treated.

Immediately after treatment:

• Compression stockings are applied
• Patients walk for 10–15 minutes before leaving the clinic
• Most patients resume normal daily activities the same day

Some temporary symptoms may occur during healing, including:

• Mild soreness or tenderness
• Bruising near the treated vein
• Tightness along the vein as it heals

These symptoms generally improve as the vein is absorbed during the healing process.

WHEN EVLA MAY BE RECOMMENDED

EVLA may be considered when patients have symptomatic varicose veins caused by venous reflux, confirmed by ultrasound.

Common symptoms include:

• Leg pain or aching
• Heaviness or fatigue in the legs
• Swelling of the lower legs
• Bulging varicose veins
• Skin discoloration near the ankles

A venous ultrasound evaluation is required to determine whether EVLA or another treatment is appropriate.

WHY PHYSICIAN EXPERIENCE MATTERS

Ultrasound-guided procedures such as Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy are technically demanding.

Accurate vein access, precise delivery of laser energy or sclerosant, and real-time interpretation of ultrasound imaging require advanced training and experience.

The safety and effectiveness of these procedures depend heavily on the skill and judgment of the physician performing them.

At International Vein & Skin Institute:

  • All venous ultrasound evaluations and ultrasound-guided procedures are personally performed by Dr. Jozef Tryzno, MD, RVT, DABVLM
  • Dr. Tryzno has more than 25 years of focused experience treating chronic venous insufficiency and varicose vein disease
  • Treatment planning, procedures, and follow-up are provided by the same physician, ensuring continuity of care
