LASER SKIN RESURFACING FOR FINE LINES & WRINKLES
Fine lines and wrinkles develop as part of the natural aging process, as collagen and elastin production gradually decline over time. Early changes often appear as fine lines in the late 20s or 30s and may deepen with continued aging, sun exposure, and environmental factors such as ultraviolet (UV) light or smoking.
While wrinkles are inevitable, their visibility and associated skin texture changes can often be improved with appropriately selected laser-based treatments.
At International Vein & Skin Institute (IVSI), laser skin resurfacing is approached medically, with careful evaluation, individualized treatment selection, and realistic expectations.
WHAT IS LASER SKIN RESURFACING
Laser skin resurfacing uses controlled laser energy to improve damaged skin by stimulating collagen remodeling and, in some cases, removing superficial skin layers. The goal is smoother texture, improved firmness, and reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, and visible scarring.
Resurfacing treatments vary in depth and intensity and are selected based on skin condition, treatment goals, and anticipated recovery.
RESURFACING APPROACHES
Laser treatments for skin aging may address different aspects of skin change:
- Non-ablative skin remodeling – stimulates collagen without removing the skin surface
- Fractional resurfacing – treats portions of the skin to promote controlled healing
- Ablative resurfacing – removes damaged skin layers to allow regeneration
No single treatment is appropriate for all patients.
NON-ABLATIVE SKIN REMODELING
PicoSure Focus™ Laser
Non-ablative skin remodeling is often used for early wrinkles and texture irregularities.
- Delivers ultra-short laser pulses into deeper skin layers
- Stimulates collagen and elastin remodeling
- Preserves the skin surface
Typical Response
- Redness and tenderness usually resolve within 1–3 hours
- In sensitive skin, redness may persist up to 24 hours
- A series of 3–5 treatments is commonly recommended
Topical Anesthetic
- Not required
- May be applied for comfort if needed
Most patients return to normal activities the same day.
FRACTIONAL ERBIUM SKIN RESURFACING
(SUPERFICIAL TO INTERMEDIATE DEPTH)
Fractional erbium resurfacing allows adjustable treatment depth to address fine lines, texture irregularities, and early skin laxity.
- Uses Erbium 2940 nm laser with Pixel Stamping Technology
- Creates microscopic treatment zones to stimulate collagen remodeling
- Surrounding skin remains intact to support healing
Typical Response
- Immediate redness with a honeycomb pattern
-
Mild sunburn-like sensation
- Up to 24 hours for superficial settings
- 2–3 days for intermediate settings
- Mild peeling over several days
Topical Anesthetic
- Not required for most settings
Most patients return to normal activities:
- Same day after superficial treatments
- Next day after intermediate-depth treatments
A series of 3–5 treatments is commonly recommended.
SUPERFICIAL NON-FRACTIONAL ERBIUM LASER PEEL
A gentle ablative option that removes the most superficial epidermal layer.
Common Uses
- Spot imperfections
- Surface irregularities
Typical Response
- Mild sunburn sensation for 1–2 hours
- Peeling for 1–2 days
- Pink, sensitive skin for several additional days
Most patients return to normal activities within 2–3 days.
ADVANCED FRACTIONAL ABLATIVE RESURFACING
CO₂ FRACTIONAL LASER RESURFACING (iPixel UltraPulse)
CO₂ fractional resurfacing is reserved for more advanced skin changes, including deeper wrinkles, acne scars, enlarged pores, and significant sun damage.
- Creates thousands of microscopic treatment zones
- Preserves surrounding tissue to support structured healing
- Produces robust collagen stimulation
Typical Response
- Redness, swelling, and peeling over several days
- Pink, sensitive skin during healing
Most patients return to normal activities within 5–7 days, though recovery varies by treatment intensity.
Topical anesthetic and post-treatment medications are required and discussed in advance.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
- Laser resurfacing often requires multiple treatments, depending on modality
- Results vary based on skin type, condition severity, and treatment depth
- Recovery expectations differ and are reviewed during consultation
