SCLEROTHERAPY INJECTIONS FOR SPIDER VEINS
Sclerotherapy injections for spider veins are performed as a cosmetic procedure to improve the appearance of visible spider veins and small reticular veins on the legs.
This procedure involves injecting an FDA-approved sclerosant directly into surface spider veins, causing them to gradually close and fade over time.
Injections are performed using very fine needles and are often described as similar to small pinches or mosquito bites.
HOW SCLEROTHERAPY WORKS
To treat branching spider vein networks, injections may be directed not only into visible surface veins, but also into feeder veins that contribute to the appearance of surface veins.
When underlying venous insufficiency has been excluded, this approach helps improve overall treatment outcomes and reduce early recurrence.
NUMBER OF TREATMENTS
The number of treatment sessions and injections needed varies between individuals and depends on:
- Number and size of spider veins
- Distribution and branching pattern
- Individual healing response
- Aesthetic goals
Some patients may be satisfied after one or two sessions, while others with more extensive spider vein clusters may require three or more treatments.
Because individual response varies, the exact number of sessions needed cannot be predicted in advance.
POST-TREATMENT CONSIDERATIONS
Temporary bruising or small hematomas are common and typically resolve over time. In some cases, trapped blood can be aspirated to support the healing process.
Less common effects may include:
- Temporary skin discoloration
- Local skin irritation
- Small superficial ulcers at injection sites
When pigmentation occurs, it may persist for several months before gradually fading.
IMPORTANT COSMETIC TREATMENT NOTES
Cosmetic sclerotherapy is performed
for spider veins on the legs only.
We do
not perform sclerotherapy injections on veins of the hands, arms, or forehead.
Compression stockings may be recommended for more extensive treatments.
Eligibility for cosmetic sclerotherapy is determined on an individual basis, following accepted medical standards of care. In some cases, an ultrasound evaluation may be recommended to exclude underlying venous insufficiency prior to treatment.
A consultation is required for all first-time spider vein patients.
