LASER TREATMENT FOR SPIDER VEINS
Laser treatment for spider veins on the legs is considered a cosmetic procedure and is performed to improve the appearance of visible surface veins when no significant underlying venous disease is present.
Vascular lasers are widely used for cosmetic treatment of facial redness, telangiectasia, and rosacea. When applied to spider veins on the legs, laser treatment may be appropriate in select cosmetic cases, but requires careful patient selection.
Laser treatment of leg spider veins can be more technically challenging than facial treatments, and not all cosmetic spider veins are ideal candidates for laser therapy.
WHEN LASER TREATMENT MAY BE CONSIDERED
Cosmetic laser treatment may be considered when:
- Only a small number of cosmetic spider veins are present
- Veins are very small or delicate
- Injection-based cosmetic treatment is not suitable or preferred
- Cosmetic treatment is desired for limited areas, with the understanding that results may vary
Larger or deeper cosmetic spider veins often require multiple treatment sessions, and laser treatment may become more costly compared to cosmetic sclerotherapy over time.
TREATMENT CONSIDERATIONS
Laser energy must be delivered at sufficient intensity to achieve cosmetic vein closure. This energy may be applied using:
- Lower-intensity doses over multiple sessions, or
- Higher-intensity doses over fewer sessions
Multiple treatments are commonly required to achieve cosmetic improvement. As with any cosmetic procedure, more aggressive treatment is not always better, and patient safety is always prioritized.
LASER TECHNOLOGY USED
At our clinic, cosmetic laser treatment for spider veins is performed using the Cynosure Cynergy® laser with MultiPlex technology, which combines pulsed dye and Nd:YAG wavelengths. This approach allows energy delivery to be adjusted based on vein size, depth, and skin type.
IMPORTANT COSMETIC TREATMENT PERSPECTIVE
Because cosmetic sclerotherapy typically results in less skin irritation and collateral tissue injury than laser destruction, sclerotherapy injections are often recommended as first-line cosmetic treatment for spider veins on the legs when appropriate.
